Ometepe offers something for everyone. Sandy beaches, volcanoes, jungle, wetlands and a rich cultural heritage mean you can get active, get cultural or just stay lazy.
  • Climbing Maderas Volcano: This hike takes you through coffee plantations, both sub-tropical and wet-tropical forests as well as into the crater, where centuries of rainfall has created a mystical lagoon. The hike is technically challenging due to the wet conditions but the changing scenery, monkeys and birds make it well worth the effort.
  • Climbing Concepción Volcano: At 1600m this mountain presents a real challenge for anyone but allows you to reach the very top where you can peer into the mouth of an active volcano. On clearer days the views along the way are breathtaking.
  • Kayaking the Istian Wetlands: Only accessible when the lake level is sufficiently high (typically between July and February), this wetland ecosystem is home to many aquatic birds, cayman crocodiles, turtles and monkeys.
  • San Ramon Waterfall: Located on the far side of Maderas Volcano from TOTOCO, this impressive 120m waterfall greets you after an hour-long hike up a beautiful tropical canyon.
  • Cultural Excursions: There are guided hiking opportunities that will take you through unique shade grown coffee plantations, past a century-old hacienda, and reveal the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous Nahuatl Indians who have left thousands of rock carvings (petroglyphs) throughout the area. These hikes can also be done on horseback.
